Happy Thanksgiving

Yesterday I made a cake for a friend that should have been easy. Nothing went right all day! I dropped one of the cakes when I was putting it on the cooling rack, I didn't soften the butter or cream cheese before I tried to mix it, as a result I couldn't get all the bumps out and had to pick them out of the icing as I decorated and they clogged all the tips, and I thinned the icing out too much and it was hard to decorate with.  I was going to start my next cake last night, but decided to wait until today. I needed bad cake day to be behind me. I am not going to post a picture of the cake I didn't care for because I want you to hire me!!

Today I woke up and got to work. The kids helped me cut leaves out of fondant the other day. (this cake is for my family Thanksgiving). So today I baked a french vanilla cake with cream soda (egg free for C). Butter cream icing and covered in fondant and fondant leaves. I think it turned out pretty well.

I actually envisioned this cake last year. On that occasion I tried to make a cake from scratch and fondant from scratch and nothing went as planned. So I tried again this year. I am pretty happy.  So have a happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Allergy Friendly

I have been testing a few recipes for egg free cakes recently. My son C has an egg allergy and his birthday is next month so I have been trying very hard to find a yummy recipe because he really looks forward to his cake every year. A few people told me about using a can of pop in a cake mix. You use any can of pop and a cake mix of your choice and that's it. We chose triple chocolate fudge and 7up. It was pretty yummy:) The combination of flavors is nearly endless! Anyhow, then I let my little girl M pick what to put on the cake. So she picked Hello Kitty.

So I found a basic picture of Hello Kitty and decided to try it freehand. Well she kind of looked like a pig so I scraped it off and tried again!:) And my sweet hubby J told me that this may be his favorite cake I have done yet! (even though it is pink and Hello Kitty!)

I am hoping to do a cake with fondant soon. Stay tuned!

Creative Outlet

So, I really feel like decorating cakes is my creative outlet. I am not artistic, but I have always wanted to be. I have always wanted to be able to paint or to draw. So when I discovered I was half way decent at this, I was super excited! I still have trouble doing much free hand, but there are ways around it!

I made this cake last week end for "S". My "ways around it" didn't work so well and I had to do most of it freehand. It takes a lot longer because I check and recheck multiple times before I put a line down just to make sure it's right. The one wing is a little off, but I was pretty proud of my freehandedness! (Yeah I know that's not a word, but I like it!) "S" liked the cake and his little sister "J" is already planning what she wants on hers in June. I'll take that as a win!

It's an x-wing fighter from Star Wars, in case you didn't know. And I was so proud that "S" knew the little blue dot was R2D2!!

Welcome!

Welcome to MoCo Cakes!! I am so happy you are here! I started trying to make my own cakes 3 years ago for my son's 2nd birthday. I enjoyed it so much I have done one for both him and my daughter every year since then.  In the Spring I took a cake decorating class to learn how to do more things and do them more accurately.

The Princess and The Frog cake is my favorite one I have done. I did this one prior to my class and the snowman as well. I did learn to make some flowers out of all different kinds of icing and I would love to get to practice those more and have an occasion to use them!

I am still working out all of the details for this new venture. It is just something I love to do and would like the opportunity to do it more often. If you are in need of a cake please send me an email at MoCoCakes@gmail.com and I will do my best to make your ideal cake!
